Saryo Hiranoya 茶寮平野屋

A traditional Japanese sweet representative of Ozu

Shigure is the quintessential traditional confectionery of Ozu castle town, and the best place to try is undoubtedly Saryo Hiranoya. The proprietor of this establishment, Hirai-san, is a second-generation family specializing in Japanese confectionery, proudly carrying on his family's legacy by creating the finest shigure. Made using sugar, salt, and honwarabi rice flour from Ozu and boiled azuki red beans from Hokkaido, this delightfully chewy treat has been made the same way since ancient times and continues to be a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Enjoy this traditional sweet with a fresh cup of green tea or matcha while taking in the beautiful views of the private inner garden.
