Ohnishi Tougei Pottery Studio 盤泉荘(大洲市)
Charming Tobe ware handcrafted by a family of master artisans
Discover “dignity and modernity” at Ohnishi Tougei, a family-run pottery studio located in Tobe Town, Ehime's famous ceramics district. Founded in 1970 by Hikaru Ohnishi, the studio is now led by his son, Hajime (master wheel-thrower), alongside sister Kumi Shiraishi and wife Michie, who specialize in intricate brushwork and hand-applied decorations.
The studio specializes in handcrafted Tobe ware celebrated for its icchin technique—a method of piping slip onto clay to create raised, tactile relief patterns. Their signature creations feature soft-matte and deep blue glazes, accented with charming botanical motifs such as grapevines and pansies.
In the welcoming first-floor shop and second-floor gallery, visitors can browse and purchase everyday tableware, microwave-safe mugs, versatile pasta and salad bowls, and delicate in-store exclusive accessories. The studio also accepts custom orders, allowing customers to request personalized pieces and bespoke designs.
