The Saijo Festival is a magnificent spectacle featuring around 150 Danjiri wooden floats and Mikoshi portable shrines from the local neighbourhoods of the city. The highlight of the festival is fantastic “Kawairi” on 16 October. From 1pm each Danjiri comes together on the banks of the Kamo River flowing between the city and the Isono Shrine. Approximately 80 Danjiri form a line along the banks and light lanterns for the Mikoshi to be taken to the Isono Shrine toward evening. The festival’s grand finale sees the many Danjiri from the Isono Shrine surround the Mikoshi shrines to prevent them crossing the river.
