Michi-no-Eki Nijinomori Koen Matsuno “Shimanto-gawa Gakushu Centre Osakana-kan”
Southern Ehime (Nanyo)
Uchiko wax, made from berries of the sumac tree, was a major export of Uchiko, used in a range of products from crayons to cosmetics. However, the world gradually shifted to mass-produced, oil-based waxes and Uchiko's industry declined.
Omori Warosoku is the last remaining warosoku (Japanese candle) store in Uchiko City and has been handcrafting candles for seven generations since the Edo period (1603–1867). Watch the craftsmen at the store as they meticulously apply layers of wax by hand using the same natural ingredients and methods passed down for centuries. Warosoku candles give off a bright flame, do not blow out easily, do not drip, and produce very little soot.
